The UK Global Business Mobility – Expansion Worker Visa is designed for overseas parent companies that want to send a senior employee to the UK to establish a branch or subsidiary. The process involves two main steps. First, the UK entity must apply for an Expansion Worker Sponsor Licence, which requires showing a UK footprint such as company incorporation, a bank account, or an office, proof that the overseas parent company has been trading for at least three years, and credible plans to expand into the UK within two years. The UK branch or subsidiary must also operate in the same line of business as the parent company. If approved, a provisional licence is granted for four years, during which the entity must establish a trading presence and upgrade the licence to an “A-rated” status by adding either the Skilled Worker or Global Business Mobility – Senior or Specialist Worker tiers. Once the licence is secured, the nominated individual can apply for a Global Business Mobility – Expansion Worker Visa from outside the UK (not as a visitor). To extend their stay beyond the initial term, the individual must later switch to a Skilled Worker or GBM Senior/Specialist Worker visa after the UK entity’s licence has been upgraded.
